Anyone else struggling with these summer heat waves? Here in California we have had some sweltering weekends…like so hot, just the thought of leaving the house wipes you out. I’ve had trouble mustering the energy to even venture outside of the safety of my air-conditioned home the past couple of weekends, so I thought I’d share some tips on still feeling put-together when the temperature runs into the triple-digits.
I grew up in the Inland Empire in southern California, where summer days were regularly in the 90’s or 100’s. I’ve always been a lover of fall and winter more than summer, but I thought I had a pretty good tolerance for the heat. I moved up to northern California about six years ago, and man – I acclimated to this milder climate quickly. I’m good in a temperature range between 65 and 80 degrees…otherwise I’m miserable (I’m high maintenance that way). If it’s supposed to be 90 degrees, I dread the thought of getting ready and going out. Make up? It’ll just sweat off. Hair? I’ll sweat and it’ll stick to my forehead and neck (eww). Clothes? Just ugh. One of my favorite sayings is “Struggle City, population: me,” and hot days epitomize that.
The Tee Shirt
Heat waves just call for denim shorts, light cotton shirts, and a messy topknot. This is what I spend my summers in (it’s a matter of survival). I’ve found this formula works well if you have quality, flattering basic tees and shorts. I’m working on a post about my three favorite tees, and this Zsupply pocket tee is definitely among my favorites. I typically buy it in three packs, and I might have to add this tropical pack to my collection. It’s super light, flattering, and is so easy to style. There’s also a nice little taper at the waist that I love! I have a straight body shape (the opposite of womanly curves), so this tiny taper makes this tee so much more flattering. Seriously though, I am uber picky about the cut of my clothing, and this tee fits the bill.
I picked up these American Eagle shorts a month or so back and I am so happy with them! I hadn’t worn AE clothes since high school, but the brand is definitely having a resurgence! They were having a mega sale and I bought these along with a couple of their festival shorts. Now be forewarned: I like my denim shorts short. I’ve always been an uber short-shorts girl (thank God I do spin)…like I remember being in middle school always having to have my short length tested to see if it complied with school rules. Did anyone else have that rule where your fingertips couldn’t be longer than your shorts? Like once per week during the warm months my teacher would check my shorts because I was always cutting it close to being too short. Short-shorts are a lifestyle, people. One of my fave bloggers, Sarah Lindner of The House of Sequins, calls them denim underwear LOL. Anyway, how long was that tangent about shorts?
So I don’t have the best messy bun, guys, but I try. Even when I go for the messy bun look, it turns out more like a ballerina bun…but at least my hair is off my face during these hot days! This particular look is about 25% hair, 75% dry shampoo…but it works. I’m trying to grow my hair out, and I’ve found that my hair has so much less damage with a bun versus a pony. I also bought this amazing hair dryer (part of the Nordstrom Sale) that has been life changing. The brand touts that it’s better using this blow dryer than letting your hair air dry (which I doubt), but I can vouch that it takes half the time to blow dry my hair and it looks so much healthier. I’m working on a post about lazy girl beauty hacks, so if you have ANY, let me know!
The Crossbody & Slides
This crossbody bag is perfect for hot days and running errands. It’s perfect for summer and has the prettiest detail in the strap. You can shop it here. And these Target slides…I’ve been wearing them daily for the last few weeks. I love them so much, and they are some pretty convincing designer dupes!
The Heat Did Not Win
Moral of the story is: I left my house when it was about 100 degrees and I didn’t completely melt. So helpful to have easy basics laying around to make venturing out into the hot summer sun slightly more bearable. I’m linking some of my fave AE shorts below and these amazing Zsupply tees. I’ll also link that blow dryer and a few other shorts options. I’m working on some posts about my favorite basic tees, lazy girl beauty hacks, and also a little educational piece about sunscreen and three tried-and-true fake tanners. I’d love to hear if you are interested in any other topics!
Don’t forget…the Nordstrom Sale is live to the general public. Check out my past posts about my purchases and my wish list and keep your eyes peeled for restocks. I also have a post up about the perfect all-white outfit…it’s super classy and super easy! Follow by email above or by following this link. Thanks to all you wonderful, supportive people out there…I truly love you and am so happy you like my little blog! Seriously let me know if there are any life or style topics you want me to research!
