I was born and raised in southern California, where short-shorts and bathing suits are almost year-round uniforms. Because of that, I was always searching for a perfect tan. No matter how many times I would lay out in search of a base tan, I would just burn and turn pale again. It was definitely a waste of time AND so bad for me for so many reasons. I even look back and cringe to say I tried a tanning bed a couple times. Thank goodness those days are far behind me!
Have you ever wondered, “Hey, is it really that bad to get a base tan?” Me too. Many people even say it’s better for you to get that base tan than not…but I’m here to tell you heck NO! I decided to put this post together after listening to one of my favorite podcasts, Stuff You Should Know, where they covered sunburns, suntans, and sunscreen. I pulled a lot of this information from their podcast and this article from the How Stuff Works website.
I’ll also be going over a quick review of three sunless tanners that I’ve tried…let’s dive in!
- Hydrate skin: you should be hydrating your skin and taking care of yourself leading up to self tanning. I use aloe vera if I’m really irritated or my Sol de Janeiro body cream.
- Prep skin: My sunless tan is more even and smooth if I put a light body oil on before I fake tan. My skin also ends up being less irritated, so I highly recommend this step! I am OBSESSED with Kopari Coconut Body Oil, but I also love the basic Neutrogena Light Sesame Body Oil
Fake Bake Flawless Self-Tanning Liquid
St. Tropez Self Tan Classic Bronzing Mousse
St. Moriz Instant Self-Tanning Mousse
L’Oreal Paris Sublime Bronze Self-Tanning Towelettes
This was a SUPER quick overview of sun safety and sunscreen…if you’re interested, I highly recommend you listen to this podcast from Stuff You Should Know. I seriously love these nerdy guys and all the random information I get from them! Comment below with your favorite sun safety tips!
